Hero Piece: Off the Shoulder Top

Don’t you just love this time of year?…….

The promise of long hazy days and warm lazy nights ahead… (with tangy mojitos thrown in for good measure).  Summer holiday prep is underway and skin baring garments are starting to get a run. But with the showing of skin comes the self-consciousness that inevitably arises when we shed the winter layering and expose parts of our body that haven’t seen the light of day since the beginning of Autumn.

My upper arms are one of those areas. From all my years of competitive swimming in my teens I have arms that were once muscly and toned – and now??…….. not so much.

Those sleeveless dresses and spaghetti strapped camis that look so good on my thin armed counterparts just highlight this flabby area.

One of the key trends of the season …. Off the shoulder style tops and dresses – allow me to have my sartorial cake and eat it too.

I get to bare my (fake tanned) shoulders and decollatage whilst covering up my upper arms. Hooray!! I feel like I’m channelling both Sophia Loren and a flirty flamenco dancer when sporting this style.

This Off The Shoulder Top ($49) from Katies not only cleverly conceals my “tuckshop lady” upper arm under hang, but it also features the added bonus of a stunning summery orange hue which makes me happy just looking at it.

The other slimming benefits of this Off the Shoulder Top from Katies include:

Slimming Styling Tips

Neckline: The horizontal line this OTS (Off the Shoulder) style creates visually broadens the top half of the body and balances out a bottom heavy shape.

Sleeve style: The sleeves are on an angle – and are flutter style –  so this distracts the eye from this area. Avoid sleeves (on any dress, top or shirt – Polo Shirts I’m talking about you!!!) that create a horizontal line across the widest part of the upper arm – as this will make them look even bigger.

Silhouette: The design of the top skims – rather than clings – my tummy. Most OTS styles are a relaxed fit so I can eat that second helping of Christmas pudding and everyone would be none the wiser.  Just avoid too much fabric, ruffles and pleating as this will make you look bigger than what you are.

Length: The length of the top covers the base of my belly. There are quite a few styles that are more midriff in length – which look great on younger girls – but on my post baby, caesarean/hysterectomy scarred midriff – let’s just say – Umm Hell NO!!!

So enjoy this run into summer and have a mojito for me – bare shouldered and enjoying the sunshine. Cheers!

Happy styling…and remember…life is too short not to look and feel fabulous every single day because you are worth it.
